Abstract

Pragmatic analysis is an important branch related to linguistics, which focuses primarily on semantics and is greatly impacted by how language is used in certain contexts. Pragmatics is considered a tool to study language with relation to the context. So, in teaching literature works such as drama, novels fictions, or poems, the language and meanings used in those literature is related to the contexts.      The goal of the current study is to illustrate how language discourse, context, and function relate to real-world circumstances by using William Shakespeare’s Macbeth as an example. Using speech act theory, it identifies the aim of the language employed and its function in a given text. The current research is related to pragmatic analysis and the use of literature language up on readers or audiences. The pragmatic analysis focuses on the play Macbeth that is written by William Shakespeare. The present research aims at analyzing the speech acts used in the play and explaining how it is employed as an effective device leading to a holistic state.    The attribute of being unifying and meaningful in relevance is what pragmatics term it. It investigates how the notion of relevance serves to meaningfully connect texts. The applicable theory of Sperber and Wilson aids in explaining the significance of linguistic discourse in the texts. They claim that comprehending dialogic implications requires choosing the pertinent context cues and interpreting everything the speakers say as pertinent to the conversation. The present study aims at analyzing the speech acts in the play Macbeth by Shakespeare to analyse the narrator’s goal and the statements made by the characters. The paradigm of this literary discourse explores a variety of speaking behaviours. The classification method proposed by Searle (1969) identified five sorts of numerous activities and functions that speech acts fulfil, they are the following:

Declarative, directive, representational, expressive, and commissive speech acts are all examples of speech acts.

Shakespeare also used personification, metaphor, simile, and reference throughout his book Macbeth. In order to engage his audience, he also employs sound techniques like alliteration and assonance.

Figurative language represents an author’s strategies to correlate a sense of meaning to one of the audiences’ human senses
