Enhancing ESP Postgraduates’ Academic Writing Skills via Free Writing Techniques

Abstract
Writing is a fundamental factor in language. Good writing skills are necessary for all the students to achieve, their educational and employable requirements. This study aimed to enhance the ability to use free writing techniques in developing ESP postgraduates’ academic writing skills. To achieve the aims of the study; the researcher adopted the experimental-one group design of a pre-test and a post-test to evaluate the experiment. The sample used for this study was 20 ESP postgraduate ‘learners chosen randomly from the Faculty of Political Sciences, Al-Nahrain University-Iraq. Their ages range between 22 and 27 years. The instrument of data collection was a written test and questionnaire. The topics chosen from Headway student’s book, they were required to construct an assignment based on the given keywords. Based on the analysis of the collected data, it was found that there were significant differences between the learners’ scores in the pre and posttest in favor of the posttest. The academic writing skills of the ESP postgraduates’ learners were improved by using free writing technique. Finally, the study provides suggestions to use free writing as anew powering learning, technique beyond the writing class to enhance ESP learning in the field of teaching English for specific purposes.

الملخص
تعتبر الكتابة عامل أساسي في اللغة.ان مهارات الكتابة الجيدة ضرورية لجميع الطلاب لتحقيق متطلباتهم التعليمية والتوظيفية.تهدف هذه الدراسة الى تعزيز مهارات الكتابة الأكاديمية لطلاب الدراسات العليا من متعلمي اللغة الانكليزية لاغراض خاصة في من خلال تقنيات الكتابة الحرة. لتحقيق أهداف الدراسة ؛ اعتمدت الباحثة تصميم المجموعة التجريبية الأولى للاختبار القبلي والبعدي لتقييم التجربةوالعينة المستخدمة في هذه الدراسة هي 20 طالبا من الدراسات العليا تم اختيارهم عشوائيا من كلية العلوم السياسية ، جامعة النهرين- العراق. وتتراوح أعمارهم بين 22 و 27 سنة. كانت أداة جمع البيانات عبارة عن اختبار واستبيان كتابي.. الموضوعات المختارة من كتاب طالب Headway كان مطلوبًا منهم إنشاء مقالة معتمدين على الكلمات الاساسية الموجودة في المقالة.بناءً على تحليل البيانات التي تم جمعها ، تبين وجود فروق ذات دلالة إحصائية بين درجات المتعلمين في الاختبار القبلي والبعدي لصالح الاختبار البعدي ولوحظ بوجود تحسن في اداء الطلبة باستخدام تقنية الكتابة الحرة. أخيرًا قدم اباحث مجموعة من المقترحات والتوصيات بهذا الشانز.
