The Study of the Arabic-English Translation of Qur’anic Terms of Punishment: A Corpus Based Study

Abstract
The current study is a translation analysis of the meanings of the Qur’anic words al-Athaab (punishment) and their related formations into English. The researcher aims to know how the different formations of the word al-Athaab are translated by the Qur’anic translators whose translations were selected for analysis. The researcher has presented the following hypotheses: The majority of Qur’anic translators are probably rendering the meanings of Qur’anic terms of al-Athaab in life with the overall translation method rather than partial translation. They are likely to make changes in the equivalent formation to arrive at a better translation. Qur’anic translators are expected to select more than one single lexical item in English to explain the in-depth meaning of the Qur’anic terms with reference to AL-Athaab in life. The Qur’anic translators whose rates of success are high are likely counting on the Qur’anic context of the situation of the Ayas selected for investigation in defining the equivalent in the target language. Translators are expected to make gains in the translations of the Qur’anic terms with reference to AL-Athaab in life into English. Some English Qur’anic equivalents that embrace gain in translation are not likely to produce a complete image of the terms. The researcher selected seven Qur’anic Ayas that embrace the term Al-Athaab and its derivatives taken from the University of Leeds Qur’an Corpus Website as the case study. Moreover, he designed an eclectic model of analysis to see how the translators whose translations are found in the Corpus Program rendered the meaning of the AL-Athaab into English. finally, the study validated all the hypotheses highlighted above.

تحليل ترجمات الفاظ العذاب في القرآن الكريم الانكليزية: دراسة تستند الى برنامج لغة المتون الالكتروني

تشير الدراسة الحالية الى تحليل ترجمات معاني الفاظ العذاب ومشتقاتها الى الانكليزية. ويهدف الباحث الى معرفة كيفية ترجمة مشتقات الفاظ العذاب على يد المترجمين المختارة ترجماتهم لغرض التحليل. واعتمد الباحث الفرضيات الاتية: يرجح ان غالبية المترجمين الذين نقلوا معاني الفاظ العذاب ومشتقاتها الى الانكليزية قد اعتمدوا على الية الترجمة الشاملة مقارنة مع استخدام الية الترجمة الجزئية. يتوقع ان يحدثوا تغييرات في تكوين المكافئ اللغوي لاجل الوصول الى ترجمة افضل. ويتوقع ان يختار مترجمي القرآن الكريم اكثر من لفظة معجمية في الانلكيزية لشرح المعنى الباطن المتعلق بلفظة العذاب في القرآن الكريم او احدى مشتقاتها. وان مترجمي القرآن الكريم الذين يحصلون على نسب نجاح مرتفعة بالنسبة لترجماتهم يعزى الى اعتمادهم على سياق النص القرآني لتحديد المكافئ المطلوب. يتوقع ان تكون بعض الترجمات التي تكون فيها زيادة في المفردات ان لاتنتج شيء مفهوم في لغة الهدف. واختار الباحث سبع ايات قرآنية وموقع جامعة ليدز البريطانية برنامج لغة المتون القرآني لتكون دراسة الحالة. وعلاوة على ذلك, صمم الباحث الية تحليل انتقائية لرؤية كيف ترجم المترجمون المختارة ترجماتهم لغرض التحليل معاني الفاظ العذاب الى الانكليزية. في الختام، اثبتت الدراسة صحة الفرضيات المذكورة في اعلاه.
